How This Blog Works

We will be using this blog for a couple reasons.

1. The first reason is to discuss the history of each time period we study. I felt like students need to try and grasp more of the history in each unit and not just what they see in the movie.

2. To try and give you a voice. The more of a voice you have the more connected you will be to this class.

Rules About this Blog:

1. Treat everyone respectfully when you comment
2. Put your first name and last initial when commenting. To do this select "Anonymous" on the comments page rather than signing up or using a Blogger account. Make sure you type in your first name and last initial at the bottom of your comment. example -CoryP

Assignment for this Blog Post:

1. Please go to the "comments" or "post a comment" link below and share with use what is the most historically important event that has happened in your lifetime. Keep in mind that a historical event is something that makes the news, changes society somehow, or can be found in a "history textbook" so to speak.

2. Also, after watching the videos in Lesson 1, please make a connection between World War II to something in your life. This could be as simple as a family member or friend that fought in the war. It could be something about how teens dealt with the war compared to how you are dealing with our current war. Any connection you can make will work.

So that means two things will be in your post, an important event in your life and how a connection between your life and what you learned about WWII in Lesson 1.

Please read the student comments that you see on this page, they will give you some ideas on how to share. Here is my example of how to respond to the prompt.

The most important historical event to happen in my lifetime is the rise of the Internet. It has changed how I communicate, how I work, and how I learn.

During WWII the entire country came together in the war effort. People who didnt go off and fight in battles stayed home and worked for the war, sold for the war, and sacrificed for the war. In todays time, the country doesn't focus on the war like it did during WWII.

The most historical event in my life time, would have to be this distant learning program. It has made me a better reader, writer, and listener.

Another event in my life that refers to WW11, would probably be last month, my mom and I went on a 6 mile hike to support the diabetes assosication. Sort of like the war, people supported them and were supporting another cause.

An important event that has happened in my life would have to be the Gulf War of 91. i was born in february of that year, and my dad was supposed to do a tour about a week before i was born, But thankfully he had sustained a back injury a few months before and was relieved.

Something that relates to WW11 in my life is my uncle walt. He was drafed in '41 and became a cook on a Naval ship during the war. He served three or four tours during the War and earned a purple heart for dragging one of his men off of a burning ship.

Cory Plough said...

@Nik- That is an amazing story about your uncle. Thanks for sharing.

Something important that happened in my life was finding out that my great grandfather on my dad's side was a WWII veteran. His ashes are spred at the veterans cemetary in Boulder City.

Something important in history that has happen..... hmmmm thats a hard one that i really have to think about. i think i would have to say desert storm. I don't really remeber it. I was just a baby, but still its something right ?

I would have to agree with Mr.P, and say that the most important historical event to happen in my lifetime is the rise of the internet, It has changed all forms of communication for me, and It has made school easier for me.

Something that has to do with WWII that relates to me is that my grandmother was a little girl living in Germany while the war was going on, she saw death, and she saw suffering. She barely had any food , any clothes, she saw her friend's parents die, or her friends die from hunger after the war and during the war.So she was a civilian watching all of it happen right in her own home.

Cory Plough said...

@ Kyle- Kyle, can you elaborate a little bit? I like where you are going with this idea, but I just want to hear why this was important. Also, make sure you address WWII. Elaborate.....

A historical event in my life has to be the Iraq war in general. Because of it the nation as we know it has changed, possibly for the worst. I plan on joining the marines and most-likely fighting in the war (because you know the war will still be raging by then.)

I have a couple World War II events. One, is that my great uncle fought in the war and something strange happened. As he was turning a corner a bird suddenly flew past; for the rest of his life he had a phobia of birds.

The other thing is that my grandfather was discharged for having his appendix removed. After that he had my father, who later had me. Removing the appendix couldn't get you out in the Korean war only seven or so years later. If he wasn't allowed out in '43, there's a fair chance he could have been killed, and I might have never existed.

The most important historical event to happen in lifetime i would have to also say the internet, because if i have family in another state or something and calling long distance cost so much i have internet to help, and its also good because if you don’t understand something you can look it up.

Another event in my life that refers to WW11, i would say one my grandpa was in the air force for a really long time then he went deft and now he just makes/build little model ones, and second my Uncle Ralph was in the navy for a really long time I don’t know much about it though

I feel that the most historical event to happen in my lifetime was the 911 attack on the twin towers. This event has made it a real pain for me getting through the airport. For some reason my name is now on a watch list. It also made me realize that the United States is much more vulnerable than I thought it was.

Something that relates to WWII in my life is that I have a friend who went and joined the army and is going to be stationed in Iraq. The war today is quite different than it was then but it’s still all bad.

I would have to say the most important historical event in my life would have to be football. I say its important to me because without it I wouldn't even be in school. It's the only reason I try to keep my grades up, so I can play.

Another event in my life that has to do with WWII is racial segregation because in the war every person in each platoon had to trust the person next to him. If he was black, white, green, or purple every one worked together.

@ Keyon - broaden your perspective a little bit. While football may be extremely important to your individual like, and to all of us sports fans, it isn't what is considered a historical event. Please recomment on that portion of your post.

I would say the occupation of Iraq by the United States is one of the most historical events to happen in my life. The war is one of the most disputed topics in the United States, and critized on many different levels of legality, human rights, and other things.

I think the biggest link between my life and WWII is that there is always war around us. The way the world has been set up is essentially flawed, and there is always war, and there will always be war until it changes.

The most historical event that happened in my lifetime was my cousin joined the marines. My grandfather was a Marine and so was my great grandfather.

My great grandfather on my dads side of the family was an Auwshwitz officer for the German Army in World War ll. We still have all the badges of his , and its actually really neat.

I'd say that the most historical event to happen in my lifetime would have to be 9/11. One of the things that changed for me because of this event, is the way I travel. There are so many resrtictions for our safety, that traveling by air has become somewhat inconvientent and rather stressful.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor during WWII relates to 9/11 and the destruction of the Twin Towers. One of the ways they are similar is the fact that no one expected it to happen, and it was a shock that was absolutely devestating to the peoples morale. Also, the bombing of Pearl Harbor started our involement in WWII, and 9/11 started our War On Terror.

Cory Plough said...

@ Simone -Great connection between WWII and 9/11. This comment is exactly what I would love to see more of in future comments.

The most historical event that has happened in my life would have to be 9-11 because it changed the way of life in America. The event was huge that it was put in US history textbooks.

A connection between World War II and 9-11 is both times we were attacked on American soil. Eventually we got pulled into war, because people attacked us first and now we have to finish it.

Anonymous said...

I can not help but think that the Terrorists who bombed us of 9/11, watched tapes of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

But I can see where they're coming from. We are the enemies of Afghanistan because thats what they were made to believe the same as Iraq, Japan, and Germany.

Every war in history is this way a fight for what each opposing side believes in.

A life changing event that has happend in my life time would be 9/11.

A time in my life that relates to WW2, would be when my parents had to fight for the right to addopt me, like our troops fought for freedom.

The most historical event that has happened in my lifetime would have to be the september 11th attacks. I will never forget watching the news that morning and just being in awww! I could not beleive what I was seeing. I will never forget this horrible time in american history and the effects it had on every single person. I will be telling my children about this one day.

A historical event I would say that has happened to me is the rise of technology. We have computers, cell phones, and internet access.Which was something that we didn't have 50 or 60 years ago.But technology has changed and I am surprised of what they have come up with in these past years.

9/11 can relate to the pearl Harbor video because when the attacks took place. They dropped a lot of bombs and killed lots of people.Just like the people in the video who dropped that atomic bomb over the Japaneses. So 9/11 can relate to world war ll just a bit.

I was born and raised in hawaii and I really didnt know what went on, cause of my young age. Though my grandpa was served in the military during the time of the war.

The most historical event happend today. This was the Inauguration of our first African American President, Barack Obama. This is a Historic Moment that shows that people are accepting change.

I think it is Important to have a good president .They have to make crucial decisions in difficult times, to do whats best for our country.

Both of my uncles are Ret.
Master Chiefs in the Navy. One served in the Vietnam War and the other in Desert Storm. They have told me about the importance of serving their country and how important it is to have a strong leader in times of war.

Cory Plough said...

@Roxanne
Please elaborate on your response. You have a unique perspective of WWII coming from Hawaii.
Also, make sure you address BOTH QUESTIONS THAT ARE ASKED.

The most important historical event to happen in my lifetime would aslo be the rise of the internet. The internet has change the way I communicate with people that don't live in Las Vegas Nevada.

A event that refers to WWII would have to be my grandfather being in the cuban missile war.

A historical event to happen in my life time would have to be 9-11. It has changed the way airports work. Also some people are now scared to travel in an airplane.

The WWII changed the world, it was a different war then it is today. Back then everybody cared about the war and now only one group of people care about the war.

The most important historical event that happened in my life time was the terrorist attack on the twin towers in the pentagon. I was nine years old and i had just moved from Pennslavania to Las vegas.

After 9/11 the country came together and united in prayer and unity. People were helping each other. We're still in war against terrorism. After WW2 people tried to help each other they tried to rebuild the towns in Europe.

An important Historical Event is happening now, with the economy slumping and people losing their jobs left and right. America is going through another Depression, and the Stock Market is getting terrible every minute. Not only does this effect the workers of America, it also effects me. It effects me because I can not get a job to pay my cell phone bill and my brothers are looking for jobs everyday. Baby Boomers are competing with young people to get a job.

Cory Plough said...

@ Zach H- thanks for sharing Zach. 9/11 was important. The other 2 events you mentioned were personal more than public so wouldn't qualify as historical.

Also, you need to address the 2nd PROMPT

Anonymous said...

The most historical event in my life is the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It not only changed the way Americans live, but it also sparked a war.

In World War II, the country gave up plenty for the soldiers in the war, such as living off of rations of food, water and fuel, as the soldiers needed the majority of it.

The most historical event that has occurred in my lifetime would have to be the first African-American man elected Presedent. Although I was mostly rooting for John McCain, it is still pretty neat to know we have made history. It will be interesting to see how we also come out of the recession that we are in. Which has been hard on alot of people to adjust to.

How I relate to WW11 is by my grandpa. He was Staff Sgt. Richard S. McCully. He was stationed in Italy, then on his mission, he was reported missing in action over Austria, after his B-24 was shot down by German fighters. But him and the others on the flight safely crash landed in the Alps of Austria. Before they crash landed he had to walk over an open bomb bay at 23,000feet. My grandpa endured on a thirty day hike with members of the underground movement escaping enemy territory. Afterwards he was awarded the Flying Cross and Air Medal.

Although we had nothing to do with the war at first, we got drawn into the war after Pearl Harbor. However, Coronel Tibbits was put into history for being the first man to drop the atomic bomb.

Although the atomic bomb shouldn't have been built, due to to much power in one countries hands, it also came to an advantage.

The biggest event to change my life was 9/11.

Watching millions of people die on the tv due to the twin towers, the pentagon, and even, those men and women at war. After many years of complaining that I should do something, I signed up with the navy, and am now waiting to turn 18 to help with this war, and my country.

I think 9/11 taught me that there is war everywhere in the world, and that no matter when we think it's over, it isn't.

The most important historical event to happen in my lifetime is accpting jesus crist in my life. he has changed the way i think of other people, has tought me to be more compasnote towared others, and to have more hope.

an event that is simular in WWII, is that all the jews should have died, but because they had hope in something greater than them shelfs, i believe that some surrived to tell their story. because we all read the stories and none of them should have survived.

I think the most historical moment in my life was when I got to meet and shake the hand of Sarah Palin. She was doing a speech out in Henderson and my friends father was an adviser, he would sit with her in the limo and stand by her as she's speaking, sort of like a body guard that gave her advice when needed, and so he got us to meet and talk with her. Now that was definitely a historical experience that ill never forget.

World war two...affected me in a very little, but very strong way, i guess you could say. When I was a kid Pearl Harbor was my favorite movie to watch. It's what started getting me into movies. I loved analyzing them, realizing how great movies really were. After that I started to analyze people. Which gave me the thought of becoming a psychologist. I know its extremely far off, but that movie that was based on WW11, it led me to what I want to do with my life.

I know that other people have already mentioned this, but the Gulf War was a significant historical event that happened in my lifetime. This is especially significant to me because I was born in Landstuhl, Germany in a military hospital while my parents were stationed there during Desert Storm. While they weren't taking part, with my father being a weapons instructor and my mom being an air traffic controller, they did train/help other people that were going to take part.

As for how WWII is connected to my life, I couldn't really find something as personal as a relative served in the war or something as such. What I can say for how it connected to my life is that there is many things we use today that may have been used during WWII or evolved from items used. There is also the project I did last year on Weapons of Mass Destruction that included the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, among many other different kinds of bombs and bombings.

Cory Plough said...

@Ryan - Wow, interesting about being in Germany. Well, for you, even coming from a military family connects you to WWII. You did a fine job making the connect!

I really have not had any major historical events in my life yet.

Something that relates to WWII in my life was my great Aunt Frieda Gould. My Aunt Frieda was born and raised in Germany she helped build airplane parts for the Germans.

The most important historical event to happen in my lifetime is 911, because I saw that americans wern't as untouchable as we said we were.911 was a major event in my life I still rember where I was when I saw the news of what had happned. That event had changed airline travle and other things.

WWII has effective me the most, it is my favorit war. So I looked therw my family history and learned that my grandfather was a german foot solder in the war. He was 16 when he entered the war, and was captured by british solders, and forced to live on herbs, or something like that. But it was so bad I cant even get a story out of him about the war.

One of the most historical events that happened in my life was the war on terrorism in the middle east. Even though yet personally it hasn't effected my life much it has effected many Americans.

Well something about World War 2 is my great aunt Frieda Gould worked on German airplan parts back in World War 2. Than when I met her I heard many story of what she went through during it.

I have never really thought about such things but I would have to say the same as Mr. Plough. With out the internet and computers. With out such things a lot of things would be diffrent. It effects everything now days.

I was not around during WWII but my Grandpa was. He served as a mechanic. Also my two pastors were also apart of World War II. So the biggest effect on me I would have to say the people that fought in the war.

I am connected to World II because of my great grandfather,Denzil Wicklund ,who was a sailor in the U.S.Navy during the war. He was a mechanic on a cruiser in the Pacific Theater. While on leave in Australia,he ment and married my great grandmother. She and my grandmother came over on ship from Australia in 1946. My grandmother is a U.S. citizen because of a law called the War Brides Act of 1945.The law says that children born abroad of American Servicemen were automatically U.S. citizens.

The most historical thing that has happened in my life time is Obama becoming the leader of the USA.Some of the things that are diffrent from ww2 and now are that the war that we are in now is not as even big as ww2 and not as many people are going to die. ww2 had every person in the usa intouch with the war but now its like teens do not even realy care about the war because they do not really know why there is even a war. Something that has made an impact not just in my life but in a lot of people's lives today is the econmic crisis we are in. You would think we would learn from our mistake in the past(great depression). In some way we did in other ways we did not. The economy now is slipping back to the past. Back to maybe another depression.

I have no connections to WW2or the war now taking place in Iraq.I learn about the WW2 in history and it is sad and I do watch the news on the war in Iraq and how it is progressing and I am sorry for all the lives that have been lost but i have no way of knowing the effects it has on another peoeple because it does not have as much of an affect on me. My grandfather sereved in the Korean War. He once read me a story that he wrote of his time there and his friend that died in the war. I remeber him crying as he read the story. The tears running down his cheekcs and the pain in his face. Seeing my granfather feel the way he did made me have a better view of what the soldiers in WW2 went through and the soliders in Iraq are going through. The difficult times they encounter and that lie before them.

The reason i have picked 9/11 is because that has messed up USA.

The was that WW11 and 9/11 are simmilar is because we were not expecting it just like we didnt expect Pearl Harbor . When pearl harbor happened we all worked together to get through it and we are now doing that with the war we are in now.
