The 1950's

The 1950's changed everything. Well, that's a little exaggerated because every change changes everything in the long run. But I really like the 1950's because its when we started rebelling. People sacrificed SO much during WWII that when all the soldiers came back and settled down people began to think about how short life really was. They started letting lose after that. Then the TV came and things really changed. We often think of the 1960's as the decade of change but the 1950's planted all the seeds for the dramatic decade that followed.

Here are your prompts:

Based on the readings and videos, what was the significance of the television becoming available to every home? Please give specific examples and research on Google if needed.

What is the one thing in your lifetime that has opened up your eyes to a whole new world? How?

The significance of the TV becoming redily available to the common household, was 1) advertising. Any kind of buisness could put an add in a TV show, and if it was watched, most people made the connection. 2) People were able to see the news and know what was going on around them without having to go and buy a paper.
Something that has openedd up all of our eyes to a new world was the computer and the internet. It has revolutionized everything from cooking to buisness.

The television opened the United States up to not just the rest of the country but to the whole world. As a media outlet for advertising, Hollywood and all other forms of entertainment the tv would exposed the American people to people, places and things that they could never immagine existed. One of the bigest events to ever be put on tv was Elvis Presley's performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. The reason why this was such a big deal is because, with this performance censourship was thrust upon mainstreem America.

The significance of the television becoming available to every home was that the T.V you can watch and they advertise. Advertisements can get you a job, house or car, and instead of buy newspapers for $2 just watches it on the news for free, and all you have to do is just sit there. Everybody loves the T.V. The T.V sells most then anything else.

Something in my lifetime that has opened up my eyes would be internet, because the internet has everything you need mostly. Like directions if you don’t know were some place is the internet knows where it is.

Advertising was/is a huge component of television, great pick up. TV did more though, what other effects did it have on people around the country?

I think making TV available made things a little bit harder because everyone was always wanting to watch the TV. But also made things easier for companies to advertise their products.

There have been a lot of things that have opened my mind to a new world. But i think its all of the internet, because theres just so much you can do with a computer now.

Well of course advertising was a main thing that the television "did" for America. I must say that it was a step toward the 21st century and the new networked and interwoven world. Everyone can get in touch with anyone they want to because of the step the television made.

Different races also had their own TV shows, and were shown not much, but A bit more respect. (I watched Hairspray recently, can you tell?)

Celebrities were born...not your radio celebrities but the ones that are now ALWAYS in the media. The ones that must look Barbie doll or ken doll perfect. It made an impact on youth on what they should wear/look like to be "hip" and "cool".

It took the place of the newspaper as well.
I barely know ANYONE who reads the newspaper anymore because of news channels. (Except my grand-parents. )

People don't pick up books like they would if they didn't have a "colored box" feeding the story right into their brains.

And I believe that the television was also the start of the new "over weight" and "stupid" America.( I am not going into this one)

Why do your work when you can procrastinate?
Why go work when you can watch people on TV work out?

I am no saint when it comes to procrastination and lazy-ness. I don’t believe that the television is all to blame, but I do believe that it does has some part of the why most of America is over weight, why our test scores are low, and why we judge people so harshly because of their looks.

I would go into more of the positives of this , but I don’t feel like getting into it, because it’s just not me to write positively…. Unless it’s about puppies, candy, or music (most of the time) ...hahaha.

The significance of TV's becoming available in every household was that it could make or break careers, bring news into the home and also was a great source of advertising, especially targeting the kids.

The one thing in my lifetime that has opeened up my eyes would have to be the internet. It has allowed me to stay home and do my schoolwork.

Besides advertising, television opened a new world in the ability to easily access information. The ability to broadcast information into almost everybody's homes made the spreading of information very easy.

Music has opened a new world to me. It's such a strange thing, that the combination of certains tones and rhythms and other things could result in some of the greatest things in the world. Or some of the worst.

The TV affected all of us greatly. It brought about all that we are familiar with today. Politics, sports, news, arts and so on were all accessible at the touch of a dial over time. It helped lead the way to the modern computer and created the true celebrity.

Unfortunately, it led to a nation of not just the typical couch potato, but of people who believe exactly what they see and dont question what they're told is the truth. Today it's as if we're trying to cure this "disease" that is the modern entertainment and information center.

One sigificant thing that has happened in my lifetime would be the revolution of the intternet. When I was first born the internet was unknown to most civilens, it was mostly used in big corrporations and or the government's usage. But in todays day only 17 years later everyone from the ages of 3 years up to the age of 90, are using the interent for daily things, such as the whether the time somewhere else in the world, messaging, and contacting people from the past.

The thing that is significance about the television becoming available to every home is that people can see what is going on around the world and also around their own cities. People are able to see what’s going on with war.

The one thing in my lifetime that has opened up my eyes to a whole new world, is the internet with all that information that is out there and how you can pay your bills on the internet.

The significance of the television being available in every home really oped up the world to news, politics, violence, and tradgity. The television opend up the eyes of americans who other wise would have no other way but radio, and phone to share information.

What is the one thing in your lifetime that has opened up your eyes to a whole new world? How?

One thing in my lifetime that opend up my eyes to a whole new world would have had to of been when my family moved from New Mexico to here. I rode the plane here by myself, my dad had flew out earlier that month for work, and my mom stayed behind to tie up loose ends. My gma picked me up from the airport, and we drove down las vegas blv, and for the first time in my life (at the age of 6) i saw what it was like to be homeless.

The one thing in my life that has opened my eyes toa whole new world is the passing of my best friend last september. He was twenty two. You never realize how precious life is until you lose somebod you would do anything for. It is ten times harder to deal with it when someone dies like he did. Late september of 2007 i received a phone call telling me that he had hung himself in his garage. I could not beleive this, I had just talked to him 20 minutes before. I think about everything i do from now on stupid or not because you never know when you life may end.

The significance of Television becoming available in every home is
1) It entertained and sold kids products.
2) Tv was a way to inform the people about politics and things that were happening and they also got to see their faces instead of listen to them on the radio.

The one thing in my lifetime that has opened my eyes to a new world would be cellphones. Cellphones have come along way from back then now days you can go on your cellphone to check your e-mail and also watch tv.

I believe that with all the things that had been ivented in 1950's. Especially television, It change so much for many people. Also Soldiers and many other people helped out to end WWII and also just for us to have changes in life for us to get a better life.

The significance of having a television back then in every home was. It could be another way to entertain people rather than just reading or playing outside. Even though there wasn't much that aired on TV except the news, pledge of allegiance, and some cartoons. Also even though it was only in black and white it was a great starting point. Also I believe that is how advertising started to climb because instead of this being on billboards and in the news papers. It was a good opportunity to start showing people products through television.

One thing that has oped my eyes and has changed this world is computers. Because back in the 50's and 60's you didn't have computers so you had to learn and studying things by reading encyclopedia's. Also when the first computer did come out it was very basic no search engines limited internet not a lot of computer games built on there. But now we have advanced search engines, laptops, multiple internet sites, and tons of built in computer games and games sold at computer stores. So it has come a long way. We also now have online schools, tech academy's, and online colleges which I believe is very successful.

The signifance of tv becoming avaiable to every home is that everybody who has a tv knows whats going on in the world. Weither you know whats going on locally, or just want to know the history of Gangs, you always can learn new things. People can easily turn on the tv and know the current situations with the economy. Before tv was widely aviable, people just bought newspapers. Now you can save money and save trees with just watching tv. Something that has opend my eyes to a whole new world is the Internet. With the internet, you can do so many things, IM, email, watch videos, do homework and find information on history.

Television became an important part in peoples homes for several reasons. One of these was advertising, which allowed new products to become known more quickly. The speed of news through the television was also important, since before this people had to wait for the newspaper each morning.

Something that openned my eyes to the world were things such as the internet and gaming systems. it showed me just how far we had advanced, creating virtual worlds to enjoy and allowing people to interact with one another on computers.

The TV is something everyone loves. You learn from the programs that are televised on it, you learn what is going on in the world in other countries and as everyone has been saying advertisement. I believe I learn more from television. Why? Because television is just not telling you like a newspaper it is showing you too. Visually learning something helps me comprehend more and better. So, I believe television being a household item helps people understand more of what is going around them.
Something that has really opened my eyes to the world is movies. Again, just like television. Since a great amount of the films that are made are based on true stories or true events in history. It helps me see how some events can tragically change someones life. Or movies can give a more in depth look and detail to a big historical event. Such as World War 2 or something

The significance of the TV in every household. It was a new way of communicating, advertising, intertainment and information. The TV also created jobs. The TV is still very popular in todays world.

What has opened my eyes into a new world would have to be Money. It changes the world around you it could either be a good thing or a bad thing to have but everybody needs it to survive.

MANY OF YOU ARE GETTING the gist of why tv became so important in the 1950's. Using the videos or reading in Lesson 1, or your own research, please provide specific examples in your discussion.

The significance of television now being available to the people is that companies can advertise there product in a much more productive way than before. Before the radio or banners were your best bet of advertisement. Also the making of the television acted as sort of an technological inspiration to the people. It opened up their eyes to new ideas and possibilities, just as every invention with this much of an impact would.

The internet has definitely opened my eyes to a new world. You could do just about anything, from check your bank accounts, to being able to do your schoolwork at home on the computer. The internet and the computer have definitely played a great and important role in my life.

The significance of the television becoming available to every home was that the t.v. allowed everyone to advertise their products were most can see it. Second with a t.v. people could learn more about what's happening in the world without having to go out and buy a newspaper or go to a bar and listen to gossip and rumors bout what's happening.

Something that opened my eyes is of course computers it's amazing how they show something can envolve greatly overtime.

The signficance of television was useful for several reasons. There was the advertising of products and political campaigns, which boosted the economy and gave everyone an idea what candidates stood for. There was also the telling of information like the news, where it would give everyone the knowledge of what was going on locally and accross the world.

I guess one thing in my lifetime that opened my eyes to how the world was when I was around fifteen and a half. This was when I went to get my permit and began to look for a job. I found it harder to drive than I previously thought (especially with Vegas drivers) and with the unemployment rate slowly increasing. I then realized how everything that I had planned for my life, like college, getting a job and such would be more difficult than I had planned.

The signifance of the TV becoming available to the common household is that it let people understand what was going on in the world, it also helped companys and grocery stores advertise the sales that they were having. It also helped people bring new products into there house because the children would watch television and when they would go to the store the children would put the things that they wanted.

Something the has opened up my eyes to a new world is the internet. It has everything that you need to do research on.

@Ryan-
Very thoughtful comment about how the economy and regular life situations (driving around this crazy town) can change your outlook for the future. I know what you mean.

1. The household TV became important because of advertising. If a company showed it's invention on TV, more people would see how it worked, and would want it for their everyday lives.

2. One thing that has changed my life, technology wise, is a computer and laptop. I enjoy looking up things that I don't know. Words, stories, and sometimes, online readings.

The television became a source for America to open their eyes to new world. The world of Hollywood/movies,advertising,news on the tv instead of reading the newspaper. When the tv started that is when censorship started too. The tv in general was just a way of giving the people information and entertainment.

I love music. I think music and the technology that involves music has become so advanced today it is unbelieveable. From the begining to recording music to play on radios. From really big radios and small radios was the beginning. Then music on tapes. To cd's where just as many and more songs could be played on small round disc. To finally now today when we have ipods and mp3 players. We do not need cd's or tapes we just get our music offline. The ipods now today for example the new ipod nano has be come like a cell phone just without the capability to talk. It can have music on it, videos, movies. Almost everyday there is some new technology.

The TV became important to the life style of the American life. The TV lets you know what is going on in the world or closer to home in the country, or even closer in your state or town. It also lets you just sit down and enjoy a TV program with the family back then, but now we just sit in front of it because we have nothing better to do.
The one thing that has opened my eyes to the world around me is the radio. It has music on it and also the news so even when we are in the car you can still be in the loop. it helps so we can avoid the mess on the roads and anywhere else.

The significance of TV's becoming available in every household was very high; people needed/need television to keep up to date with what’s going on in society. Although, there is the newspaper but still, I don’t think I know one person that doesn’t have at least one TV in there home, I know people that have a TV in almost every room!
There are hundreds of things in this life that interest me and that doesn’t make sense to me, but one of them (since were already on the television/technology topic) would have to be cell phones. Cell phones are amazing how they send waves through the air that catch on to a phone pole, just thinking of how a wave from a little phone can send a text message or make a call to someone who lives in a different country and they will receive it in seconds. TOUCHSCREEN!! Are you serious? The itouch, all the crazy things it can do, its insane.

Television was a wonderful addition to homes in the 50's. It brought families together to watch the world events take place. Advertising was not only useful, but very intertaining. It gave way to an era of knowledge of events of the time and also what was available to them.

Something that has really opened my eyes is the internet. I love to search interesting topics. I can see the world, talk to friends and family, watch videos and shop.
I love it.

Thte significance of television is home is it makes it alot easier to watch something on tv that is going on in the world other than having to go buy a paper every day. It also help us know when a store is have a sale or if a store was shutting down. The one thing that opeaned everyones eyes in the world was the computer and the internet with the internet u can talk to people all around the world and find out everything that is also going on in the world today. It also give kids the chance to be home scholl but taught by teachers

Television revolutionized the country and the world. It opened doors to people to see and hear. It grabbed the attention of the people and allowed advertising to take on a whole new meaning. No longer was it restricted to a piece of paper or by radio. Instead it allowed the people to see, hear and understand for them self. Like in the video with Welch's grape juice and others. It made them well known to the public therefore when people went to the store they will think of Welch's above all other grape juices. Also kids were easily drawn into it and advertisers used that to increase sales.

The thing that has opened my eyes to the world around me would have to be a toss up between TV and the Internet. Both have vast information and also allow me to see it with my own eyes and hear with my own ears.

The importance of the tv was that is was a symbol of upper class (like the car) and everone want one. It was a good tool to use for advertising, also for news. it was suppose to replase the news paper.

one of the things that opened up my eyes was the internet, because the first time i used one, i learned about different things happing around the world, and i believe so did everone.
