1960's and 70's

This is a time of great change where we moved away from the Ozzie and Harriet perception and into a more untraditional daily life, think hippies and disco balls. The women's, hispanic, civil rights, and counterculture movements led to vast progressive change. Famous leaders were assassinated, such as John F Kennedy, Robert F Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr, and Malcolm X. An infamous president resigned from office early (Nixon) and the Vietnam and Cold Wars influenced our daily lives.

Here are your prompts:

Please do a short interview of someone you know that was alive during these decades and ask them what they remember the most about the time period? Summarize.

Do you find anything similar in your life today compared with what your interview or the readings and videos told you in Lesson 1? Why or why not?

I interview my Uncle Kevin, he was born in 1962. He said that they had nothing like if you wanted to play you had to go intertain yourself by going outside. They didnt have any vedio games, computer, cell phone, they had TV's but he said there wasnt much on and it was in black and white.

The only thing thats similar is that the black and white shows on TV, we still have that. But other then that its completly different. We have more electronics and more stuff to watch on TV.

The 1960’s-1970’s…

Me: What do you remember most about that era?
MOM- In the 60’s I was in high school, and when I was a freshmen we started wearing skirts below our knees, and when I was a senior we were wearing mini-skirts.
Me: Was seeing hippies and tie-dye and everyday thing?
MOM- Yeah. Ha
Me: Do remember Hispanic Women fighting for Civil Rights?
MOM -No.
Me: How did living in that era affect your person points of view?
MOM -hmm, we went from prim and proper to easy living.

Yes, my mom went from prim and proper to easy living in the 70s, like I am about to go from yelling and fighting at home to peacefulness living with my sister across town

I interviewed man dad, and he remembers that gas prices because he wished that they were that low still. he said that converse were all the rage back then. especially the P.F. fliers.

I think things have change a lot. a lot of people were not making as much money as we are now. So yeah i see some similar things but not a whole lot.

For my interview I talked my dad into telling me the top things he remembers, and heres his list:
1)Casey and the Sunshine Band
2)Farrah Fawcet (Chalie's Angels)
3)KISS
4)Bell Bottoms
5)Silk Shirts
6)Petter Frampton Comes Alive
7)Vietnam
8)Tie Dye
9)Platform Shoes
10)Cher

There are a few things that i think are coming back or have carried over:
1)stoners
2)Hippies
3)Tie Dye
4)The Peace Sign

The only Reason i can think of is because in alot of ways teens today relate to the teens of the previous generation, like father like son stuff. Being in a major war and wanting peace and prosperity.

My dad recalls the days when he's go to the disco clubs to try to get girls(but he says he never got any there). His brother's CCR, The Doors, and Hendrix eight-tracks played loudly as he lifted weights.

Despite cultural trends or world issues, I can see similarities between my and my dad's experiences.

I interviewed my mom she was born in 1965, she said, "That during those times everything was different." My mom said, "Girls used to dress conseritive to attract boys, then by the 80's it went from casual to fun and funky." She also said, "After that phase came these mom jeans."

Theres a comparision between my mom's story and today when I was in Junior high I love wearing short skirts and shorts to attract boys and now in the end of high school i like wearing more conservitie stuff. It looks better and present your self better.

I interviewed my grandmother for this assignment. In the 60's my grandmother was a pregnant seventeen year old whom was trying to graduate high school with a little bit of dignity , see back then women did not get pregnant that young, my great grandmother was extremely ashamed and insisted that they get married before the child was born so they did , well on April 29 1966 my ,mother was born, being that this was the late sixties my grandmother smoked marijana every day as well as went to concerts every weekend. My grandmother was a hippie absolutly during the interview she would just smile thinking of the times and memories she had. She said she remebered just always sitting in grass and wondering what the world was going to be not knowing whjat was to come. I feel like of all the stories i have heard alot of things are the same ..with the exceptiuon of the price of gas. Like grug use that was just the beginning of drugs and what they could do. Over all i dont think many things changed they just aged and some got better with time and some thingsgot worse anf more harmful

1. "We remember having the African - Americans sharing everything with us Caucasions. JFK getting assassinated. These were the times that no one forgot. We all had rights and freedoms, we all loved JFK, then when his death happened, it's like the country had fallen under silence," says my grandfather, at 98.

2. I don't see much of the same thing as my grandfather did. We are a new generation. However, not even tradition is in this country anymore. The last time the United States joined together as a country was during 9/11 and Hurrican Katrina.

I interviewed my dad, this is what
he said. He grew up in the 60’s
and 70’s with not much to do; he had to make his own fun.

There wasn’t much technology
during his time period. Except for
TV’s. Which didn’t have many things to watch on it so it was pretty boring he said.

Another thing he remembers was. The very low gas prices he said gas had only cost 10 cents per gallon.

Also he remembered when the Civil
Rights Act was created in 1965. It made a huge difference when he got
to high school because. He could hang around African Americans and compete with them as well.

One last thing he remembered was the dancing because. It was in the
60’s and 70’s. He said people dressed like they were hippies
even he did to which I thought was pretty funny.

I don’t see a lot of similarities in my life compared to my dad’s time period, the videos, or readings.

My life time consists of a whole
new generation. We have all kinds
of new technology. More top
quality computers, advanced search
engines, new entertainment, and
friendly environment cars. Even
the TV’s are way more advanced
now. The only thing you can really
compare to the 60’s and 70’s is.
Some channels on TV’s are still in
black and white and they do still
show black and white movies as well.

@Jeremy - Excellent interview and comparison. It definitely seems like your generation is ruled by technology (mine too for that matter).

I interviewed my dad about the 1960's and 1970's. At around this time, my dad had just moved back to the United States from France, since his Step-dad was military. During his time back, he said everyone was in an uproar about John F. Kennedy's assassination. He also talked about all the anti-war protests that occurred against the Vietnam war and the Watergate Scandal with Nixon.

Well, civil rights are still argued about to this day. Then there are still anti-war protests, or there were to be precise, specifically about the war in Iraq. Other than these two connections I can not really think of many other things that may be related to our time period.

I interviewed my mom for the first part of this question. She says that the 1960's and 70's were much different, such as kids staying outside all day. She also said everything seemed cheaper, and it was safer then it is now, as one could go to the park after dark and be fine. She also said school seemed to give less work.

There seems to be no similirities at all between the two time periods. That time period seemed nice, with nothing violent, and it was a safe place. Today it is referred to as dangerous with all the crimes going on.

My dad was my age back in 1972 and he remembers things pretty well. He said that he was getting extemely nervous because he thought that they were going to draft him to the Vietnam War once he turned 18. They ended the drafting period pretty much around the time he turned 18. He also remembers being outside and riding his bike and owning all of the Beatles records and being a big Santana fan. He also mentioned the gas prices were low and the whole gas crisis when your liscense plate had to start with a letter just to get gas.

Things seem to be different from 1972 compared with 2009. With the economy, gas prices, Black President, and just about everything else. The situation with the war is the same, minus the drafting.

I interviewd my mother. She was born back in the 50's. She was a teenager back in the 60's and 70's. The main question I asked her was what did she remember most about the 60's and 70's. She said: The spac program and how big that was. The Vietnam war and the protesters. The crazy cloths and only having a choice of one movie to see at the movie theatre, unlike today.

Also she said life back in that time was much simpler you did not have all the complicated technology like there is today. Also kids mostly played outside they had more outdoor activities for children. There were no computers or video games to play. This relates more back to the 60's when my mother was a child.

From my interview with my mother she would compare the music to today. Because we all know that during those time periods music was a big thing. And til today alot of kids and adults listen to classic music from the 60's and 70's.

I interviewed my mother is was bore in the 1960's. She said many thinks have changed..... to her, life back then was simpler then today. There was not much entertainment or technology. She said music was the only fun, her brothers were in a band. If the economy was like it was back then or a little better life to day would be good.

Many things have changed and kids now have it really good and we still complain. I think everybody would be happy if prices were as low as they were back then and with the money we make today life would be great.

I asked my step dad what he remembered most bout the 60's. He had a lot of stories but mainly it was on how there was nothing to entertain them like their is today. He said for entertainment they always had to play outside and keep themselves entertained.

That is way different than it is today. Like I have many different ways to keep entertained like play video games, watch t.v., or search the web. We have a lot more things to help us stay entertained.

I interviewed my mom she was born in 1958. so she pretty much told what kind of diffrernt time it was. also of how may different thing their are now. like the use of elecrtical divices. also the style and the archtechture was all different.

i dont think their are a lot of things the same. their are a lot of diffrernt thing like life is made soooo easy and we have so many diffrernt devices to help us live our lifes.

My mom was born in the mid-sixties. She remembers the tube socks that with the baseball and basketball. My dad was born in ’62. He remembers the meaningful music. The cars had personality back then. The revealing clothes styles. The people were a whole a heck nicer.

What I find similar between these two time periods are the tube sock came back in styles. The revealing clothes have just got skimpier. Those are the things they remember.

I interviewed my grandpa who was in his early 20's during the 60's and asked him what he think stood out the most during the peiord.
1. Amtrak taking over all the railroads
2. Jet travel
3. the beatles
4. man landing on the moon
5. protests
6. hippies/ tye dye
7. leisure suits

I had to laugh when he said leisure suits. but I think that there are many similarites between the 60's generation and our generation. such as the hippie style is coming back very quickly. The music of the 60's are alive more than ever. and the peace that most of the young generation wants.

Well my dad was not here during this time period. He was born in Thai Land. So I interviwed my mom ask things like what did she wear, music, just what was it like in the past. First she was joking around saying that they definetly did not have the technology back than that we have now. Well she remebers how the clothing would always change. Once something was in it was out. THe clothing changed so much and alot she said. One moment she is wear long skirts to short skirts to bell bottoms. She said the life all of sudden went from being so proper and up tight to just realx east living. She loved the music from that time. My mom said the music was just great. She even got me to listing and likeing the music.
Life today is some what like the past. Our technology is changing so much so fast. It has a big impact on our lives. The clothing today is changing as well. Some of the old clothing from the past is coming back. For example the tights girls wear under the dress or skirts. The biggest event that has happen is Obama. We have been able to accept change and now have an African American as our president!
